Fresh coffee and cigarette smoke. Not exactly the smell they’d bottle and sell as a candle, but it takes me straight back to old diners where the coffee never stopped, everybody knew somebody, and apparently ventilation was just a suggestion. You smell that combination today and suddenly you’re 30 years in the past.

Chlorine and sunscreen. The second I smell that combination, I’m back at the neighborhood pool in the middle of July with wet towels everywhere, somebody yelling “no running,” and a bag of chips that somehow tasted better after swimming all afternoon. Summer had a very specific smell when I was a kid.
