An Important Missing Part

Socks pointed to the empty round socket.

“It needs the oddly shaped brass gear. It’s the only one that fits.”

He checked his pockets, then his tool tray, then his pockets again.

Chip’s face lit up.

“All right. We need a search plan.”

Chef Crumbs folded his hands around the cookie tray.

“Maybe check calmly first. Otherwise we’ll all look in the same places.”

Mo raised his mug.

“You all will. Watch.”

Dozer turned over, gave one contented snore, and pulled the blanket closer.

The Search Plan

Within a minute, Chip had divided the Square into zones, drawn a search chart, and added three boxes labeled CHECK AGAIN.

“Lamppost, flowerbeds, bench, stone path,” he said, moving faster than the plan could keep up.

Socks stayed beside the device, checking the empty fitting and the bottom of his tool tray.

Chef Crumbs followed Chip’s route at a steadier pace and looked into the places Chip had only glanced at.

Mo took a sip.

“You’re all looking where you already looked.”

Chip stopped just long enough to add another check mark.

“Good. That means the system is working.”

Same Spots, Same Looks

Soon, three neighbors had checked beneath the same bench slat.

Chef Crumbs tapped the spot with the end of his wooden spoon.

“You already checked here, Chip.”

Chip nodded.

“I checked, checked again, and then checked for a different kind of checking.”

Socks examined the device’s seams, still hoping the gear had somehow hidden inside the machine built to hold it.

Mo rested his mug on the bench arm.

“Everyone keeps searching the same places.”

This time, even Chip paused.

Then he looked across the Square as though seeing it for the first time.

A Quiet Discovery

Chef Crumbs finally noticed something unusual beneath the edge of Dozer’s blanket.

He carefully lifted one corner.

There, resting among a few leaves, was the oddly shaped brass gear.

Socks’ face brightened.

“There it is!”

Dozer continued sleeping as Chef Crumbs lifted the blanket a little higher.

The missing gear had apparently been beneath him the entire time.

“That explains the lumpy part,” Dozer mumbled without opening his eyes.

Everyone gathered around the discovery, relieved that the search was finally over.

Something Beside It

Chip picked up the brass gear and examined its worn teeth.

“This has to be it.”

As everyone celebrated, something else remained partly hidden beneath Dozer’s blanket.

A golden-yellow pencil with three teal stripes rested just inside the fold.

Socks stared at it.

Chef Crumbs raised one finger.

“Gear first. Mystery second.”

Chip held the gear carefully while Socks prepared the bulletin-board device.

No one had noticed the pencil yet.

A New, Small Question

Socks fitted the brass gear into the empty socket.

It settled into place with a satisfying click.

He pulled the lever.

The device whirred to life as everyone gathered around to watch.

Chef Crumbs still carried his cookies. Mo’s mug rested safely on the blanket. Dozer remained asleep beside the commotion.

The device worked.

Mostly.

“I can fix the rest,” Socks said. “Probably.”

Then everyone noticed the golden-yellow pencil lying beside the machine.

It had three unusual teal marks near the end.

No one immediately recognized it.

The missing gear had been found, but a new, much smaller mystery had just appeared.
