Episode #001 Welcome, Neighbor!

Welcome to Neighborhood Square.

I’m Chip, your informal guide, chief snacker, and the neighbor most likely to know where the cookies are.

This is where things happen slowly, loudly, or with pastries involved. The tree is older than any reasonable calendar, the paths lead everywhere eventually, and the sign means exactly what it says.

And yes, that is a cookie in my hand.

It is not a test. It is more of a welcome gift that I have shown remarkable restraint by not eating.

Come on. I’ll show you around.

The air smells like warm butter and calm chaos, which means everything is operating normally.

Welcome to the Square

We do not believe in grand tours around here.

We prefer small, enthusiastic introductions that usually end near food.

“That bench is good for people-watching, occasional naps, and pretending you are not avoiding anyone,” Chip explained.

Mo sat nearby with his turquoise mug, looking perfectly comfortable with that description.

Chip continued down the path, pointing toward the bakery, the workshop, and the enormous tree at the center of the Square.

Then he stopped.

His nose lifted.

“Do you smell that?”

Warm butter drifted through the Square.

Fresh sugar followed.

Chip’s eyes widened.

“Cookies.”

He tried to maintain the calm dignity expected of an official guide.

He lasted almost two seconds.

“Excuse me. The tour is experiencing a brief sprint toward warmth.”

Chip hurried toward Chef Crumbs, leaving the formal portion of the introduction behind him.

Meet Chef Crumbs

Chef Crumbs stepped into the Square carrying a tray of fresh chocolate-chip cookies.

“Freshly baked,” he said. “One at a time, please.”

He said it with the calm confidence of someone setting a boundary he had already watched fail many times.

Chip stopped in front of the tray.

“I was only going to take one.”

His hand moved closer.

Chef Crumbs raised one eyebrow.

Chip’s fingers paused above the cookies.

“I have not technically taken anything yet.”

“That is true,” Chef Crumbs said.

Chip smiled, encouraged by what he believed was legal progress.

Chef Crumbs steadied the tray.

“This is why I made two batches.”

Before Chip could decide whether that meant permission, a soft metallic rattle came from the workshop.

A small wheeled contraption rolled into the Square.

Socks followed closely behind it, wearing the proud expression of an inventor who had not yet considered every possible outcome.

Chip forgot the cookie.

For the moment.

Meet Socks

Socks guided the machine toward the tray.

“Observe,” he said. “Precision delivery with minimal entropy.”

Chip leaned toward Chef Crumbs.

“He likes saying the big words.”

“I noticed,” Chef Crumbs replied.

The machine extended a tiny mechanical arm.

It lifted one cookie from the tray, carried it across a short gap, and placed it neatly back down.

Socks beamed.

“Perfect.”

Then, for reasons involving confidence, ambition, and an unnecessary dramatic flourish, Socks turned a small gear.

The machine spun.

A second cookie slid from the tray.

It rolled across the machine, bounced from one metal arm, and launched into the air.

Chip gasped.

“No cookie left behind.”

He lunged.

The cookie sailed over his hands and continued across the Square.

Chef Crumbs lowered the tray and watched it go.

Socks studied the machine.

“The delivery path appears to have expanded.”

The cookie bounced once on the stone path and headed toward Mo.

Meet Mo

Mo took a slow sip of coffee as the cookie rolled toward him.

“This seems avoidable,” he said.

Chip hurried after it.

“I have the situation completely under control.”

The cookie hit the edge of the path and hopped into the air.

Chip stopped.

“That part was unexpected.”

Socks crouched beside the machine and examined one of its gears.

“It may have interpreted delivery as a broader creative concept.”

Chef Crumbs took a slow breath.

“Can you stop it?”

Socks reached for the controls.

The machine clicked.

Then it rattled.

Then it released three more cookies.

Chip stared as they rolled in different directions.

“I would like to revise my earlier statement.”

Mo raised his mug slightly.

“Good instinct.”

One cookie headed toward the fountain.

Another curved toward the flowers.

The last rolled beneath the giant tree, directly toward Dozer’s blanket.

Everyone turned.

Dozer was still asleep.

Meet Dozer

Chip lowered his voice.

“And this is Dozer.”

The cookie continued rolling toward the blanket.

“Please do not wake him,” Chip whispered. “It is an art form.”

Dozer slept beneath the tree, breathing in slow, peaceful rhythms.

Chip took one careful step forward.

The cookie bounced.

He froze.

Another cookie rolled past behind him.

Socks whispered, “Should we intervene?”

“We are intervening,” Chip whispered back.

“We are standing very still.”

“It is a cautious form of intervention.”

The first cookie reached the edge of Dozer’s blanket.

Without opening his eyes, Dozer shifted one paw.

He tugged the blanket slightly and created a soft fold in the fabric.

The cookie rolled into it and stopped.

Chip stared.

Dozer gave a quiet, sleepy grunt and settled back into place.

Mo nodded from the bench.

“Professional.”

Then the machine gave another mechanical hiccup.

A shower of crumbs puffed into the air.

The remaining cookies began to bounce.

The Cookie Flourish

“It added an aesthetic component,” Socks said. “Unexpected, but charming.”

The machine spun again.

Cookies hopped across the Square like startled little birds.

Chip threw himself into the rescue.

“I have this one.”

He missed.

“I have the next one.”

He missed that one too.

Chef Crumbs moved beside him with steady, efficient calm. He caught one cookie, stopped another with the edge of the tray, and scooped a third from the path before it reached the flowers.

“And this,” he said, “is why there is always a second batch.”

Mo lifted his mug in a quiet toast to practical planning.

Dozer opened one eye.

A final cookie rolled toward the tree.

He nudged the blanket forward with one paw.

The cookie landed safely in the soft patchwork fold.

The machine slowed.

It gave one final click and stopped.

Chip stood in the middle of the Square with crumbs in his fur and one cookie balanced between both hands.

Nobody was hurt.

Most of the cookies were saved.

Socks looked at the machine proudly.

“Successful field test.”

Mo took another sip.

“That is one interpretation.”

Welcome, Neighbor

Chip approached the new neighbor and held out the rescued cookie.

“I can explain,” he said. “Probably.”

Chef Crumbs stepped beside him with the remaining tray.

“Everything is fine. Have a cookie.”

Socks patted the machine affectionately.

“It completed the delivery and introduced an unexpected entertainment feature.”

Mo’s mug made a quiet clink against the edge of the bench.

Dozer, already settling back beneath the tree, patted the blanket as if approving the entire operation.

Chip looked around the Square.

The tour had lasted only a few minutes.

There had already been cookies, machinery, poor decisions, teamwork, and one completely avoidable emergency.

Chip smiled.

“So, that is Neighborhood Square.”

He offered the cookie again.

“You do not have to understand everything right away. None of us do.”

Chef Crumbs smiled.

Mo raised his mug.

Socks began adjusting another gear.

Dozer closed his eyes.

Chip leaned closer.

“Take a cookie. Stay a while.”
